At last, a skin care routine!
What better time to share my first ever skin care routine than during the dreaded season change? Don’t get me wrong I love everything about this time of year (decorating the tree, festive pjs, watching Christmas classics) but my skin on the other hand never seems to agree.
What do I mean?
Well dry, dull and blotchy pretty much sums up my skin as of recently. Sounds attractive right? I know. It almost feels like I’m wearing a permanent mud mask on my face, and not in a good way.
In an effort to make the best of a bad situation – I took this opportunity to experiment with some new products. That’s when I discovered The Ordinary and I haven’t looked back since!
This couldn’t have come at a better time because if you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I’ve been slowly transiting into using cleaner beauty products. By “cleaner” I mean products that are free from toxic ingredients and artificial junk that my ThinkDirty app definitely wouldn’t approve of. It started with toothpaste (random I know, but I’ll explain in a future post), then deodorant, to body wash and lotion, shampoo and conditioner and the list goes on. Now here I am, finally taking the leap by swapping out my favourite skin care products.
This transition was probably the most difficult and I was somewhat reluctant. Why? I think I speak for most of us when I say that my face is something I care to preserve and protect. So the thought of slathering new and unfamiliar products on it was quite daunting. Not to mention I’ve used the same products for years! Even though oils were said to be super effective, I always feared that using them on my face would cause a massive breakout.
Then came the issue of price. How was I supposed to find “better for you” facial products that were both affordable and effective? The idea alone seemed impossible especially since most things I’ve seen on the market costs the same amount as my groceries for the week.
Cody and I visited the distillery market in Toronto a little over a month ago and I literally stumbled upon DECIEM (The Ordinary’s parent company). It was a new store and if I’m being honest, I was mainly drawn to its aesthetic and thought it might make a good photo. Little did I know, it’s all the rage right now!
The Ordinary’s Mission:
“The Ordinary exists to communicate with integrity in skin care and bring to market effective, more familiar technologies at honourable prices.”
Skincare with integrity at affordable prices??? Safe to say, I picked up pretty much everything I could carry at that point. I’ve also gone back time and time again which I think is a true testament to how much I’m loving every single product.
Alright, now let’s jump right into my five minute all natural skincare routine:
I start every morning by washing my face with the acure sensitive cleanser and my precision pore pad. I’ve experimented with a few different all-natural face cleansers during this transition period and this is the one that stuck. It’s totally clean, gets the job done and is reasonably priced – good enough for me!
Ahh yes, the stuff that everyone’s been talking about! If you’re reading this and thinking “hyalur….on… what now? why am I putting acid on my face?” I had the same reaction. In simple terms, it’s a hydration support serum that works to keep the skin plump and youthful looking by drawing moisture out of the skin and makes the surface feel soft and hydrated. Once my skin is dry, I apply roughly 1-2 drops on my face before moisturizing.
This moisturizer is the perfect thing to apply directly after the hyaluronic acid serum. It’s so simple, yet effective and leaves my skin feeling super hydrated. I love to apply it in the morning before putting on my makeup since it doesn’t have a greasy consistency. The added bonus? it contains 11 amino acids! I only picked up the smaller bottle to test it out, but I will definitely be getting my hands on the bigger bottle next time.
Believe it or not, coconut oil is my favourite way to remove my makeup at the end of the day. It works like a charm and is pretty much as natural as it gets. I keep a small jar in my bathroom and I’ll either rub it between my hands or a face towel and gently remove my makeup. I like to do this step before going in with a cleanser to avoid pulling too hard on my skin.
After I get the majority of my makeup off with the coconut oil, I’ll then rinse my face using the same acure sensitive cleanser that I mentioned above.
On days that I’m feeling extra fancy, I usually like to go in with a rosewater water face mist after I’ve washed my face. Not only is it hydrating and refreshing, but rosewater has a plethora of benefits. The mist I’ve been using has just run out so I’m very eager to try Jillian Harris’ DIY refreshing rosewater face mist! I will keep you posted on how it turns out.
This is the holy grail of all face serums. It’s by far my favourite product that I have by The Ordinary and I look so forward to putting it on before bed. It’s lightweight, smooth and works really well to lock in moisture. Plant-derived squalane is an amazing hydrator that works to prevent loss of hydration and protect the skin’s suppleness. I also just discovered that it can be used as a heat protector for your hair while adding shine and reducing damaged ends. So basically, I need a constant supply of this stuff at all times.
I like to rotate my face serums to experience the different benefits. On days when I’m not using the plant-derived squalane, I’ll swap it for the rose hip seed oil instead. This is another great face serum that works to hydrate the skin and leaves a glowing effect. I apply a couple of drops on my face before bed.
That’s it! I’m sure you can probably tell by now that I’m not too fancy when it comes to skincare. In my mind, as long as I have a couple of products that are clean, effective and affordable – I’m easily pleased! It won’t stop here though because there are so many other Ordinary products that I’m dying to try out. Have you tried any of their products? If so, I’d love to hear which ones you recommend. I will try to update this page as I discover more that I love!
Ps. You look so pretty today!
